NAB Has Recovered Rs. 487 Billion in Last Three Years

Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Justice Javed Iqbal, headed a meeting to review the overall performance of NAB in nabbing corrupt elements and recovering looted money to deposit it in the national exchequer as per law.

It was attended by Deputy Chairman, Prosecutor General Accountability, DG Operations, and other senior officers at NAB Headquarters.

During the meeting, it was informed that NAB’s Anti-Corruption Strategy has started yielding excellent results. NAB officials said that the logical conclusion of mega corruption cases is the topmost priority of NAB. The meeting was informed that out of 179 mega corruption cases, 63 mega corruption cases have been brought to a logical conclusion while 95 mega corruption cases are under trial in the accountability courts, and early hearing pleas are being filed as per clause 16 (a) of NAB Ordinance, 1999.

According to details, Rs. 4.364 billion fine had been imposed on corrupt elements in 12 mega corruption cases, including former NICL Chairman, Ayaz Khan Niazi, former Revenue Minister KP, Syed Murid Kazim, and senior board of revenue members of various public departments.

The bureau had also recovered Rs. 7.859 billion through voluntary return in six cases and deposited it in the national exchequer.

The meeting was told that overall Rs. 1.256 billion had been recovered from the culprits involved in four mega corruption cases through a plea bargain, and the recovered amount has been deposited into the national exchequer.

Chairman NAB said that the accountability watchdog is committed to rooting out corruption in all its forms and manifestations.

We are absolutely determined to nab corrupt elements by adopting the ‘Accountability for All’ policy through its three-pronged Anti-Corruption Strategy of Awareness, Prevention, and Enforcement.

He said that NAB’s main focus is on cases of corruption, corrupt practices, money laundering, misuse of authority, assets beyond known sources of income, cheating the public at large by housing societies, fraudulent financial companies, and embezzlement of state funds, etc.

The Chairman said that NAB, since its inception, has recovered Rs. 714 billion and during the tenure of the present management from 2018 to 2020 has recovered Rs. 487 billion directly and indirectly, which is a record achievement. The comparative figures for the last three years are indicative of the hard work being put in by all ranks of NAB in an atmosphere of renewed energy and dynamism, where the fight against corruption is being considered as a national duty.

Chairman NAB directed all officers to conduct complaint verification, inquiries, and investigation within the prescribed timeframe based on solid evidence along with relevant details of each case.

He said that NAB has established Forensic Science Lab, which has facilities of Digital Forensics, Questioned Documents, and Fingerprint Analysis. He said that reputed national and international organizations like PILDAT, Mishal Pakistan, Transparency International, and World Economic Forum indicated Pakistan’s efforts to eradicate corruption. Similarly, the Gilani and Gallup survey has indicated that 59 percent of the people of Pakistan have shown confidence in NAB.
