Its been a month since Google released the latest Developer Preview for Android 12. This revealed hints of what to expect from Android 12 and the latest hint is about how the search feature will let you find anything on your phone on any third-party launcher.
The search widget on the default Pixel launcher lets you search for apps, contacts, settings, and more on your device. However, it appears that this feature will no longer be limited to Google Pixel phones, as there is evidence suggesting that its support will extend to third-party launchers.
This evidence was spotted by the developer team behind the Niagara Launcher and it suggests that Google has added a new device search API in Android 12. This should allow third-party launchers to use the universal search feature.

I stumbled upon this in Android 12's preview documentation. Android 12 might allow all launchers to integrate a universal search like spotlight🔍 pic.twitter.com/gkucmPZtNb

This development means that non Pixel users will easily be able to take advantage of Pixel’s search function on any Android device or launcher. There is currently no information on when this feature will be implemented, but we expect to hear more as soon as new Developer Previews for Android 12 rollout.
We intend to keep you up to date on all new Android 12 features, so stay tuned.
