Apple and Qualcomm Sued Over Patent Infringement

According to a recent report by Apple Insider, a California-based IT company Red Rock has filed a lawsuit against Apple and Qualcomm citing patent infringement. The lawsuit that was filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas last week targets certain 5G technologies that are used by both companies.

Red Rock claims that it owns these patents alleges that a handful of the chip makers’ 5G wireless transceivers infringe on its patent. However, this lawsuit specifically mentions the iPhone 12 and Qualcomm’s SMR526, SDR865, and SDX55M chipsets.

The company claims that both Apple and Qualcomm knew about the existing patents. In the documentation, Red Rock mentions that Qualcomm had received notices of the existence of the patent at least three times between the years 2008 and 2011.

The lawsuit read,

Actions taken by Apple and Qualcomm have been, and continue to be, committed in a knowing willful, and egregious manner and constitute a willful infringement of the intellectual property.

Currently, the complaint is awaiting jury trial and a long list of demands, which includes enjoinments barring Apple and Qualcomm from infringing on the patent, along with royalty payment and cover for damages.

Apple and Qualcomm have not commented on the matter yet.
