Shane Warne Slams Players for Preferring IPL Over National Teams

Former Australian leg-spinner, Shane Warne, believes that players who prefer to take part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) instead of their national team should not be considered for selection. Warne said that it is not worth it for any national team to pick such players as they will not be available for selection throughout the calendar year.

“If players want to make money, let them. But if you want to play cricket for your country and (still) you choose to play the IPL over your country, then maybe it’s not worth picking those guys,” Warne said.

“Otherwise, this is going to happen, people are going to rest and miss Test matches and miss representing your country to go and play for money,” he added.

The 51-year old said that there is nothing bigger than representing your country at the highest level and the player’s biggest test is to be successful at the Test level. He added that the players are more motivated by money these days and if the trend continues, it could potentially lead to the demise of Test cricket.

The legend said that it is a very easy decision for a player to play in franchise cricket as they can earn more than double the money in less amount of time, but lamented that there is no bigger stage than international cricket. He said that if a player aspires to be the best in the world, then he will have to perform at the biggest level against the best players and that can only happen in international Test cricket.
