Govt to Construct an International Airport in Skardu

The federal government has decided to construct a new international standard airport in Skardu to promote tourism and to meet the needs of international tourists.

The federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Fawad Chaudhry, addressed the media in Islamabad and said that the government will build an all-weather international airport in Skardu and will upgrade the existing airports in Skardu and Gilgit to all-weather airports.

“[The] Prime Minister has strictly directed to keep all airports linked with tourism operational through the year,” he added.

Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) has a domestic civil airport in Skardu. There are two asphalt runways in the airport — one is 8,740 ft. (2,664 m) long and the other is 11,944 ft. (3,641 m) long.

Skardu and Gilgit are two major tourism hubs in GB, and efforts are underway to improve the industry there.

In related news, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) announced new flight operations from Faisalabad and Sialkot to Skardu, in accordance with Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision to boost domestic tourism.
