Oppo filed a trademark called the “Oppo M1” in 2019 which was believed to be a custom chipset. Back then, it was assumed that Oppo has hired engineers from MediaTek and SpreadTrum to work on an in-house designed chipset.

However, a new report from tipster Digital Chat Station shows that it’s not the case. He claims that the M1 chip is actually a custom Image Signal Processor (ISP). For those unaware, an ISP is responsible for taking raw pixel data from the camera sensor and converting it into a final photo or video frame. The better the processing, the better the final image quality.
Oppo has been relying on the hardware inside Snapdragon chipsets for its image processing, but that is about to change with the upcoming M1 chip.
This M1 chip will be the first product from Oppo’s Project Mariana team (hence “M1”), put together specifically for designing the chip. This team reportedly consists of engineers from sibling brands OnePlus and Realme, so it is likely that their phones will also feature the M1 chip.
However, keep in mind that this does not mean that Oppo is not working on a custom chipset. According to rumors, Xiaomi, Oppo, and a few other Chinese brands are working on 5G chipsets that will arrive later this year. Though there no details on these chips just yet.
