OnePlus 9 Has a Hidden Problem Nobody Knows About

Once again, OnePlus has found itself involved in a controversy regarding the performance of its phones. This time, the OnePlus 9 series is reportedly throttling its performance when it comes to popular apps.

At first, it was only a report from Anandtech that uncovered the issue, but now OnePlus itself has confirmed that its phones are doing so. The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro throttle the performance of the Snapdragon 888 chip while running popular apps such as Chrome, Twitter, WhatsApp, and others.

However, what’s interesting is that the two phones don’t throttle their performance when it comes to benchmarking tools.

Once Anandtech reported the issue, the popular benchmarking platform Geekbench investigated the issue as well. The team at Geekbench said:

It’s disappointing to see OnePlus handsets making performance decisions based on application identifiers rather than application behavior. We view this as a form of benchmark manipulation.

OnePlus responded soon after the issue came to light. The company said that it tweaked the performance of the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro in response to complaints people had about the battery life. According to OnePlus, these phones throttle their performance in popular apps to improve power consumption and control thermals.

However, this isn’t the first time that OnePlus has done something like this. Back during the days of the OnePlus 3T, the company included code in its software to artificially boost hardware performance while running certain benchmark apps. XDA Developers caught OnePlus doing something similar with the OnePlus 5 as well.
