PM Accuses US of Using Pakistan to Clean Up its Mess

Prime Minister Imran Khan has accused the US of using Pakistan only to clean the mess it created during two decades of violence in Afghanistan.

These remarks come as Washington pushes Islamabad to use its influence over the Taliban to broker a peace agreement as negotiations between the Afghan government and Taliban leaders have stalled amid a sharp escalation in violence in the war-torn country.

Speaking with foreign journalists, the premier lamented that the US only considers Pakistan an important ally only when it comes to cleaning the mess which it is leaving behind after 20 years of a failed military campaign in Afghanistan.

He added that Islamabad has always urged Taliban leaders to negotiate and reach a peace deal with the Afghan government. However, they have insisted that peace talks can never be held until the US-installed government led by President Ashraf Ghani remains in power.

The US used to accuse Pakistan of supporting the Taliban despite being its ally. However, the truth is that Islamabad never took any sides in the Afghan conflict, the PM clarified, adding that the US now sees India as its strategic partner in the region, which is why it is treating Pakistan differently.
