UK Govt Likely to Remove Pakistan From Red List

Turkey and Pakistan are likely to be removed from the United Kingdom’s red list in the coming days, British media reports.

The development would allow passengers from these countries to travel to the kingdom as long as they test negative for COVID-19. The on-arrival quarantine condition, however, is likely to remain in effect.

According to The Guardian, the UK government is finalizing the policy for international travelers, which could be announced within the next few days. Amid speculations, attention is particularly focused on the red list, which has 60 countries on it, including Pakistan and Turkey.

However, The Guardian, quoting senior government sources, has reported that there would not be any significant overhaul in policy, suggesting that the announcement will not affect as many inbound travelers as expected.

Currently, only British residents and nationals are allowed to travel from embargoed countries on a condition of self-isolation at home or a private hotel.

The British government is facing calls for the removal of Pakistan from the red list. The Labour MP, Yasmin Qureshi, and the Conservative MP, Rehman Chishti, have written to the transport secretary, Grant Shapps, urging him to reclassify Pakistan as amber.

Note that the UK authorities had previously lifted the travel ban on India, despite the country being the primary source of Delta variant, which accounts for most of the cases in the UK.
