Asad Umar Explains the Huge Increase in Petrol Prices After Severe Backlash

The existing percentage of tax on per liter of petrol is still less than one-third of what it was at one point during the tenure of Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N), Federal Planning Minister, Asad Umar, has clarified.

The clarification from the Planning Minister comes a day after the incumbent federal government announced a massive hike in prices of petroleum products on the account of increased global oil prices and the exchange rate.

Taking to Twitter, the Minister penned that the current price of petrol is Rs. 123.3 per liter. Its base price is Rs. 105.92 whereas the total tax on it is Rs. 17.38.

Of the current total tax, the General Sales Tax (GST) stands at Rs. 11.76 and Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) at Rs. 5.62, taking the total percentage of tax on per liter petrol at 16.4%.

On the other hand, in February 2016, when the price of petrol was Rs. 71.3 per liter, the total percentage of tax on per liter petrol stood at 52%.

While the base price per liter was Rs. 46.8, the then-federal government had imposed a tax of Rs. 25.5 (GST+PDL) on per liter petrol.
