Your AMD PC/Laptop Can Leak Passwords if You Don’t Update Drivers

Security researcher Kyriakos Economou has discovered a new vulnerability with AMD CPUs that allows any user to gain access to passwords and launch different attacks. This not only gives them access to sensitive information but also lets them download it through certain Windows memory pages.

The security researcher discovered the flaw and alerted AMD straight away, after which the American chipmaker issued a fix through its latest CPU drivers. The affected AMD processors included Ryzen 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 CPUs, several generations of mobile processors, APUs, and Threadripper processors.

Economou explains that they were able to leak several gigabytes of sensitive information using this new exploit. This exploit can be used to launch different types of malware attacks including Spectre and Meltdown and also gain administrative privileges.

AMD is now instructing users to download the latest AMD PSP drivers through Windows Update or manually from their support page.

You can do so by heading over to AMD Drivers and Support Page. The support page can detect your hardware automatically but you can also search for your products manually. Simply locate your chipset model for your motherboard through the drop-down menu and click the “Submit” button.

From here, download the AMD chipset drivers for your particular model. This will give you a zip file that you can extract to get an installer file. Once it’s activated, your system can auto-detect the chipset you are using. Make sure the AMD PSP Driver is selected and then click install. You will also need to restart your computer after the installation.
