Finnish phone maker HMD Global recently announced a launch event scheduled for 6 October. The company has unveiled a new smartphone today called the Nokia G50. Historically, it is the first of the Nokia G-series to have 5G support.
Design and Display
The display is slightly bigger than before and sports an improved set of features. It is a 6.82” LCD panel with 720p+ resolution and 70 percent NTSC coverage. It is a robust panel with 450 nits peak brightness and a V-notch cutout that houses an 8MP selfie shooter.
The main camera design is the same old cookie-shaped housing bump. The fingerprint sensor is side-mounted and also doubles as a power button.
Internals and Storage
Noia G50 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset that offers 5G support and brings slightly better performance and battery life. This is coupled with 4/6 GB RAM and 64/128 GB expandable to 512GB through a microSD slot.
As far as performance is concerned, the Snapdragon 480 SoC has two big cores based on the Cortex A76 which boosts gaming (as advertised). You can expect 2 years of OS updates and 3 years of monthly security patches. Nokia G50 boots Android 11 fresh out of the box.
The phone also has a dedicated Google Assistant key, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth 5.0, and FM radio. It will also come with a free 30-day trial of ExpressVPN if you’re interested.
Cameras
The camera configuration is pretty much the same as other phones in the same mid-range category. The main sensor is a 48MP unit accompanied by a 5MP ultrawide camera and a 2MP depth shooter. There is no macro sensor and the ultrawide shooter doesn’t have autofocus.
The punch-hole selfie camera is an 8MP selfie shooter.
Battery and Pricing
Battery capacity has been improved to 5,000 mAh and charging is also better at 18W. This should be able to top up the device in almost 90 minutes.
The Nokia G50 has a starting price of €270 and will be available in Midnight Sun and Ocean Blue color options.
