Pakistan is a nation that has seen scarcity in terms of substantial Olympic joy, with only a handful number of medals to their name it seems unbelievable that a country that boasts 25 crores of population has bagged only 2 individual Olympic medals to this date, let alone a gold one.
In a dire need to change history, one name stands out who can break the jinx of Pakistan’s individual Gold Medal draught as an Olympian – Arshad Nadeem.
In a country where there is politics and murder of meritocracy in every sport, it should not be shocking that Pakistan has not won a single medal since 1992. Zero medals in 32 years show how the state caters to the athletes of the country.
In the annual budget for sports which was announced for the fiscal year 2022-23 almost Rs 15 billion was allocated by the government and was approved by the Board of Governors of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for operational purposes.
In contrast to this, the other 42 sports federations in Pakistan were allotted a budget of only 2 billion Rs (collectively), this was a testament that the government has no interest in developing other sports in the country.
The 27-year-old javelin thrower has become the nation’s beacon of hope to clinch its first individual Olympic gold medal. This aspiration comes against a backdrop of a modest Olympic history for Pakistan, which has managed to secure only ten medals in its 76-year history, most of which were in field hockey.
Pakistan’s Paris Olympics Contingent

Seven athletes were named in Pakistan’s contingent for the upcoming Olympic Games. The 18-member contingent includes 11 officials, who will travel along with the athletes to Paris for the Games, which start on July 26.
Among the seven athletes, javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem and shooters Ghulam Mustafa Bashir (25m Rapid Fire Pistol), Gulfam Joseph (10m Air Pistol, 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team) and Kishmala Talat (10m Air Pistol, 25m Pistol, 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team) are participating in the Games after qualifying for their respective events.
Faiqa Riaz (Universality Place, athlete, 100m race), Mohammad Ahmed Durrani (200m Freestyle (Universality Place) and Jahanara Nabi (200m Freestyle (Universality Place), on the other hand, are wildcard entries.
Arshad and Jahanara have been chosen as the national contingent’s flagbearers for the Games’ opening ceremony. Pakistan failed to qualify for any other disciplines including hockey, wrestling, boxing, weightlifting and volleyball.
Departures of the contingent for Paris are scheduled from July 19 to July 24.
A Glance at Pakistan’s Olympic Track Record

Pakistan’s Olympic journey has been largely dominated by its field hockey team. Out of the ten medals, eight were won in this sport, including three gold medals (1960, 1968, 1984) and three silver medals (1956, 1964, 1972). The remaining medals comprise two bronze medals, one in field hockey (1976) and another (1992) in the same sport.
In the realm of individual sports, Pakistan’s achievements have been scant. Muhammad Bashir won a bronze medal in men’s freestyle welterweight wrestling at the 1960 Rome Olympics.
Nearly three decades later, Hussain Shah clinched a bronze medal in men’s middleweight boxing at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
These two medals are the only instances of individual Olympic success for Pakistan, showcasing the immense pressure and expectations placed on Arshad Nadeem who has to end the 32-year-long draught of Pakistan’s Olympic medal in any sport.
Arshad Nadeem: The Rising Star
Arshad Nadeem’s journey to becoming Pakistan’s prime Olympic hope is a testament to his dedication and perseverance. Born in Mian Channu, Punjab, Nadeem has been passionate about athletics from a young age. His talent in javelin throw was evident early on, and he has consistently worked hard to refine his skills.
Nadeem’s breakthrough came during the 2019 South Asian Games in Kathmandu, where he set a new national record with a throw of 86.29 meters, winning the gold medal. This achievement put him on the radar as a serious contender in international javelin events.
His performance continued to improve, and at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he finished fifth, setting another national record with a throw of 84.62 meters.
Since then the rivalry between him and India’s Neeraj Chopra has ignited after the latter managed to win the Gold medal at the Olympics that year.
Despite carrying an injury, Nadeem made a record in 2022 Commonwealth Games with his throw of 90.18m on his fifth attempt, surpassing World Champions Anderson Peters’ attempt of 88.64 in the competition. He became the first South Asian javelin thrower to be the 90 meter mark.
Arshad Nadeem also finished second at the 2023 World Athletics Championship and won the silver medal at Budapest event. This was actually Pakistan’s first ever medal at the World Athletics Championships.
Why Nadeem Represents Pakistan’s Best Chance
Nadeem’s dedication and performance trajectory have instilled hope among Pakistanis for several reasons. The Olympian has shown a remarkable ability to improve his performance consistently. His national records and top finishes in international competitions reflect his growing prowess.
His performances have earned him recognition on the global stage, with experts acknowledging his potential to compete with the best in the world.
Competing in the Olympics and other high-pressure international competitions has equipped Nadeem with the mental fortitude required to excel at the highest level.
Moreover, increased support from the Pakistan Sports Board and access to better training facilities have further enhanced his capabilities.
The Nation’s Aspiration

Arshad Nadeem’s quest for Olympic glory is more than just a personal journey; it embodies the aspirations of a nation yearning for a historic breakthrough at the Olympics.
His potential to win an individual gold medal could mark a transformative moment in Pakistan’s sporting history, inspiring future generations of athletes.
The entire nation awaits with bated breath, hoping that he can achieve the glory that no Pakistani individual has managed before.
A gold medal would not only be a personal triumph for Nadeem but a moment of immense pride and joy for Pakistan.
