The residents of Peshawar will not be able to avail the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on 9 and 10 Muharram.
According to an announcement by the BRT administration, the bus service will remain suspended during these two days due to security reasons. Recently, TransPeshawar expanded route DR-14 by adding six new stops on Nasir Bagh Road.
According to TransPeshawar spokesperson Sadaf Kamil, the newly included stops are Masjid Abu Hurairah, Bangash Park, PDA Office, Masjid Umar Farooq, Masjid Abu Bakr, and Professor Model Town. With these additions, the total number of stops on this route has now increased to 22.
It is pertinent to mention that Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, falls on July 17 (Wednesday) this year. It commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.
Earlier, the provincial governments of Punjab and Sindh banned pillion riding across the provinces to maintain order.
Moreover, the federal government has approved the deployment of armed forces nationwide during Muharram. This decision came after requests from authorities in Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir for help in maintaining law and order.
Under Article 245 of the Constitution, the central government has authorized the deployment of military and civil armed forces to ensure peace during this period.
