Due to heightened risks of Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a high alert to concerned departments.
NDMA warned that there is a possibility of GLOF in these regions due to increasing temperatures, windstorms, and rainfall. It highlighted the likelihood of water levels rising in streams and mountainous nullahs until July 23.
The authority informed about the risk of landslides in these areas due to the deluge in streams and instructed the Provincial Disaster Management Authority to maintain close coordination with relevant departments.
It urged them to ensure machinery readiness to respond to any emergencies caused by severe weather conditions and to deploy rescue teams in vulnerable areas.
Furthermore, NDMA instructed the PDMA to inform residents about the risks associated with GLOF and cautioned tourists against traveling to these regions during such weather conditions.
Furthermore, departments were directed to conduct drills for possible evacuations in emergencies.
