The female camel named Kemi, whose leg was brutally chopped off by a farmer in Sindh’s Sanghar district, has shown remarkable improvement in her health. The Animal Shelter Home, where Kemi is being treated, announced that she stood up on her three legs for the first time since the incident.
The shelter’s management credited the progress to consistent massage and physical therapy provided over the past few weeks. They also mentioned that Kemi’s injured leg is being treated daily with careful dressing and bandaging.
The cruel incident took place in the Mund Jamrao village of Sanghar district, where a landlord allegedly chopped off Kemi’s leg as punishment for scavenging his field for fodder. The camel’s owner, Soomer Khan, expressed his distress at a press conference at the Sanghar Press Club, stating, “I have no enmity with anyone. I don’t know why this was done to my camel.”
The incident came to light after a video of the camel with her severed leg went viral on social media, prompting widespread outrage. Sanghar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) took immediate notice, and an FIR was lodged against unknown persons under sections 429 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also took notice of the gruesome act, ensuring that the wounded animal received an artificial leg and was transferred to Karachi for further treatment.
On July 9, the Additional Sessions Judge granted bail to six accused individuals: Darya Khan Shar, Jaffer Butt, Abid Shar, Abdul Shakoor Shar, Gul Baig Lashari, and Rustam Shar. Each was released on surety bonds of Rs 200,000. The judge adjourned the hearing of the case to July 12.
According to the SSP Sanghar, two of the six suspects, Abdul Shakoor Shar and Abid Shar, have confessed to their crime during the investigation.
