Power generation in the country went down by 2 percent YoY to 13,461 gigawatts per hour (GWh) in June 2024, but up 7 percent MoM compared to 12,618 GWh the previous month.
In fiscal year 2023-24, power generation in the country went down by 2 percent to 127,059 GWh from 129,589 GWh recorded in FY23.
The cost of fuel for power generation decreased by 11 percent YoY to an average of Rs. 8.6/unit in June 2024. According to Topline Securities, this was due to higher zero fuel cost hydel generation.
In FY24 fuel cost was down by 6 percent to Rs. 8.8/unit.
Major contributors during June 2024 were Hydel (35.1 percent), RLNG (18.1 percent), Coal (15.8 percent), and Nuclear (14.8 percent).
Hydel-based power generation increased by 14 percent YoY to 4,729 GWh in June 2024 from 4,133 GWh last year. On an MoM basis, Hydel-based power output increased by 21 percent in June from 3,906 GWh in the previous month.
RLNG power generation is down by 4 percent YoY from 2,544 GWh in June 2023 to 2,437 GWh in June 2024. On an MoM basis, RLNG generation is down 11 percent. For FY24, it is up 7 percent YoY.
Coal power generation decreased by 13 percent YoY to 2,126 GWh in June 2024 from 2,434 GWh last year, while monthly coal power generation shows an increase of 21 percent from 1,755 GWh observed the previous month.
Nuclear-based power generation increased by 8 percent YoY to 1,998 GWh in June 2024 from 1,857 GWh last year but down by 15 percent MoM compared to 2,360 GWh in May 2024.
Solar-based generation is up 12 percent YoY from 105 GWh last year to 118 GWh in June 2024. In FY24, it fell by 4 percent YoY to 1,030 GWh from 1,073 GWh in 11MFY23.
Fuel Cost
During June 2024, fuel cost for power generation decreased by 11 percent YoY and also down 2 percent MoM to an average of Rs. 8.6/unit, compared to an average cost of Rs. 9.6/unit in June 2023 and Rs. 8.7/unit in May 2024, respectively. For FY24, fuel costs are down 6 percent YoY with an average cost of Rs. 8.8/unit, compared to Rs. 9.3/unit in FY23.
Furnace Oil was the priciest with a cost of Rs. 31.6 per unit in June 2024 while High-Speed Diesel was the priciest during FY24 at Rs. 45.4 per unit.
