The United States remains the top destination for international students seeking to further their education. Many of these students aspire to work for American companies and eventually secure permanent residency.
Congressman Thanedar of Michigan’s 13th Congressional District has introduced the “Keep STEM Graduates in America Act.” This legislation aims to encourage talented STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) graduates to remain in the U.S. after completing their studies.
The H-1B visa program allows U.S. companies to employ foreign workers in specialized fields requiring high expertise. Congressman Thanedar’s legislation proposes several key reforms:
The proposed act aims to simplify the visa process for international STEM graduates, enhancing their chances of staying in the U.S. The bill focuses on increasing the issuance of H-1B visas and making the application process more accessible.
The U.S. currently offers Optional Practical Training (OPT) to international students, allowing them to work in their field of study for up to 12 months post-graduation. STEM graduates can apply for a 24-month extension, giving them a total of three years to gain valuable work experience. The Keep STEM Graduates in America Act seeks to complement this program by making the transition to an H-1B visa more straightforward.
International students, especially those in STEM fields, have significantly contributed to innovation and growth in the U.S. The proposed H-1B visa reforms highlight the importance of retaining these talented individuals.
“As an immigrant whose educational opportunities in the U.S. shaped all the subsequent opportunities I received, I understand the importance of keeping our most gifted students in the country,” said Congressman Thanedar.
Congressman Thanedar believes that every student deserves ample time to find suitable employment and integrate into the workforce. “This bill is just one of many that I support because they bring us closer to a more equitable world while creating a more robust economy to the benefit of Americans and Michiganders,” he concluded.
The Keep STEM Graduates in America Act represents a significant step towards reforming the H-1B visa process, ensuring that the U.S. continues to benefit from the contributions of skilled international graduates. By making it easier for these individuals to stay in the country, the legislation aims to enhance the U.S. economy and foster innovation.
