A resident of Tehsil Kahuta, 42 kilometers from Rawalpindi, has been diagnosed with Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) and is being treated at Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH). In the last two weeks, two patients with Congo fever have unfortunately died at the same hospital.
A 41-year-old woman named Iram, wife of Sultan, was admitted to BBH from a Kahuta village showing symptoms of CCHF. She has since been confirmed positive for Congo fever.
The hospital administration stated that the patient is currently stable. Previously, on July 8 and July 13, two confirmed cases of Congo fever resulted in deaths at BBH.
The deceased were Hassan aged 27, son of Fiaz, and Naseem aged 35, wife of Asif, both from Chakwal district, about 80 kilometers from Rawalpindi.
Dr. Inayat ur Rahman, Additional Medical Superintendent (Administration) at BBH, stated that while the patients who died of CCHF in the last two weeks were from different families, all Congo fever cases treated at BBH this year had a history of handling animals.
Dr. Inayat ur Rahman added that, over the past two and a half months, BBH has recorded four deaths from Congo fever. This includes two patients from Attock District who died on May 3 and May 20. He described the CCHF cases at BBH as sporadic.
Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) is caused by the Nairovirus from the Bunyaviridae family. It spreads to humans through bites from Hyalomma ticks or direct contact with the blood of infected animals or humans.
Initially described in Crimea in 1944 and identified in Congo in 1956, CCHF has a mortality rate ranging from 2% to 50% in treated cases and 50% to 90% in untreated cases.
