Lahore High Court Stops District Courts From Ordering IT Equipment Worth Rs. 1 Billion

Lahore High Court Chief Justice Aalia Neelum has ordered the cancellation of a previous order to buy new equipment for video conferencing in Punjab’s district courts.

In a statement, the court said the decision was made due to the country’s economic challenges and that existing equipment in district courts, including laptops and Wi-Fi, is sufficient for video conferencing.

The Lahore High Court’s former registrar had directed all district and session judges to buy equipment for video conferencing, including recording evidence and other legal proceedings. The estimated cost of this project was a substantial Rs. 1 billion.

In response to this, Chief Justice Aalia Neelum canceled the previous order and stopped further purchases to address the country’s economic situation.

Despite the purchase order being canceled, video conferencing will continue in district courts using existing equipment. This will ensure no interruptions to the recording of evidence, statements, and other legal proceedings.

Chief Justice Aalia Neelum, who oversees the information technology (IT) wing, developed the standard operating procedures for video conferencing in Punjab’s courts. These procedures were approved and implemented by the Lahore High Court’s administration committee.
