The Punjab government has announced that all government commerce colleges in the province will be closed and transformed into information technology (IT) colleges.
The Punjab Department of Higher Education has started implementing this initiative, which aims to modernize the province’s educational system and better align it with current job market demands.
The plan involves revamping all 85 government commerce colleges in Punjab, transforming them into IT institutions. The decision was taken due to fewer students enrolling in commerce courses.
According to the Higher Education Department’s report each commerce college now has fewer than 100 students. The sources further revealed that the government spends up to Rs. 300,000 per commerce student.
This high cost has led to the decision to convert these colleges into IT institutes to cut expenses and better match educational programs with current job market needs.
The transformation will involve hiring experts and adding new facilities to the IT colleges. These upgrades will include co-working spaces for young IT entrepreneurs and e-libraries to boost research and learning.
The project is expected to start within the next 10 days, with efforts to complete the conversion swiftly. Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat emphasized that this change aims to enhance Punjab’s position in the global IT industry.

What are the reasons to reduce the number of students in commerce?
There is only one reason that the practical and professional accounting, auditing and tax education is not a part of the syllabus. Students memorise only bookish knowledge and they face serious issues at the time if interview.
It’s only in our country where incompetent politicians and policy makers follow the trends rather than using minds.
One positive and long lasting step of Punjab government to convert commerce colleges into IT colleges will go a long way for competing the world and boosting our economy. The step should not be limited to just announcements but practical steps are the need of the hours.
Keep it up and play your positive role.

Very good decision. Don’t need so many B. Com/ MBA. Convert them into IT training centres and some of these institutions should also imparting skills like electricity mechanics, plumbers, welders, painters, sanitary fitters, car mechanics etc. Also arrange language learning for different countries where ageing population is problems. Trained them and send them to European or other countries where they are required.
People are paying a lot of money to those who are sending needy you people to go abroad through illegitimate means.
That is the best way to discourage such practices.
