Karachi’s Water Supply Situation to Get Slightly Better

Chairman WAPDA Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) visited the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme, K-IV, to assess the construction progress. He reviewed work at several key sites, including the intake facilities, pumping stations, pressurized pipelines, access roads, project offices, and the project colony.

General Manager (Projects) South and Project Director Amir Mughal briefed Chairman WAPDA on the progress of each contract, timelines for the remaining work, and strategies to meet the project targets. They also discussed the financial status and the funding needed to complete the project on schedule.

It was reported that the project is 46% complete, with Rs. 59.5 billion already spent on construction. Phase-I, which has an approved budget of Rs. 126 billion, is scheduled for completion by December 2025, provided that funds are made available on time.

Highlighting the importance of the K-IV Project for Karachi, the Chairman instructed the project team to speed up construction to meet the scheduled completion date.

He also emphasized the need for close coordination with stakeholders to ensure timely power supply from the Government of Sindh and improvements to the water distribution system by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC).

The K-IV Project aims to supply 650 million gallons per day (MGD) of water to Karachi from Keenjhar Lake. The project is being executed in two phases. Currently, WAPDA is working on Phase-I, which will provide 260 MGD of water. Phase-II, once completed, will add another 390 MGD to the city’s water supply.
