SummerSlam 2024, marketed as SummerSlam: Cleveland will be the 37th annual iteration of one of WWE’s “Big Five” PPVs when it takes place at the 67,000+ capacity Cleveland Browns Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio. A whole host of delectable matches are set to take place, awash with high drama that seems to surround every major storyline these days.
Nia Jax will challenge Bayley for the WWE Women’s Championship by virtue of winning the Queen of the Ring tournament held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia last month. Bayley is on the brink of a record-setting title reign, currently tying Rhea Ripley at 380 days with this iteration of the WWE Women’s Championship. It has been a while since Nia Jax has held a singles championship, and Bayley will look to keep her opponent waiting.
In similar fashion, King of the Ring winner Gunther will challenge Damien Priest for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. This will be Priest’s 2nd title defence, with Gunther looking set to be one of the toughest opponents the Archer of Infamy has faced in recent times. With Gunther recently referring to Damian Priest as “Street Trash”, the champion seeks to defend his honour as well as his title.
We then have LA Knight challenging Logan Paul for the WWE United States Championship. Knight has been gunning for the US title for quite a while now, even managing to beat the champion in a Money in the Bank qualifying match held on the June 28th episode of SmackDown. Going off from that victory over the champion, Knight has constantly brought up the fact that he reigned supreme in their last meeting. With Cleveland being Paul’s home state, however, home ground advantage is sure to play a part.
In the match for the WWE Women’s World Championship, we will have a love triangle face-off, with a recently returning Rhea Ripley firmly intent on reclaiming the title she lost due to Liv Morgan breaking her arm backstage in April. What makes this a love triangle faceoff is the added dynamic of Dominik Mysterio seemingly caught between Liv Morgan, who has been eyeing Dom in lieu of his accidental interference leading her to win the title in Jeddah and Rhea Ripley, Dom’s onscreen love interest. All this combustible energy is sure to provide one frenetic match.
Sami Zayn and Bron Breakker will collide for the WWE Intercontinental Championship, with Breakker deadset on snatching the title away from Zayn. The challenger has been on a warpath in recent weeks, with brutal targeted attacks directed towards the champion as well as Ilja Dragunov. Breaker also violently beat Dragunov in what was a #1 contender match for the IC title on the July 22nd episode of RAW. The match is essentially going to be a test of Sami Zayn’s sheer will against the sheer power of Bron Breakker.
We will also have what is the continuation of Cody Rhodes’ ongoing feud against the Bloodline, with acting Bloodline leader Solo Sikoa finally stepping up to challenge for the WWE Undisputed Championship. Cody Rhodes may have defeated the previous iteration of the Bloodline, but this will prove to be a very different battle. Solo has kicked out Jimmy Uso as well as Paul Heyman from the group while adding the Tongans aka Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa as well as Jacob Fatu to essentially reforge the Bloodline in his own image. There is also the intrigue of another Tongan on his way to the WWE and this is sure to give fans quite a bit to think about.
Finally, in one of the most hotly talked about rivalries at the moment in WWE, we have the much-awaited encounter between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre with Seth Rollins acting as Special Guest Referee. Ever since CM Punk made his return to the WWE, he has drawn the ire of Rollins and McIntyre alike. After McIntyre beat Rollins at Wrestlemania XL, CM Punk’s distraction allowed Damian Priest to cash in and take the title, leaving McIntyre to be a champion for a measly 6 minutes.
Since then, McIntyre and Punk have been at each other’s throats, constantly trading barbs online and costing each other matches. Punk’s interference led to losses not only for McIntyre, but his interference at the last Money in the Bank event also cost Seth Rollins, further embroiling him in this feud as well.
McIntyre also seems to have found another level in his sheer disdain for Punk, with the former posting and then later deleting a photo on Twitter with the man most involved with CM Punk’s acrimonious departure from AEW, Jack Perry. Even the caption “Cry us a river” was a callback to Jack Perry’s jibe at Punk. New Japan Pro Wrestling star Kenta also got into the action, reposting the photo on Instagram with his face added. The motivation being that CM Punk famously took the GTS finisher from him without approval. All these elements are sure to provide us with an awe-inspiring match. No matter what the result ends up being, the fans are sure to love every moment.
