Smoking harms not only smokers but also non-smokers through second-hand smoke, with severe environmental consequences. It emits thousands of metric tonnes of carcinogenic chemicals, greenhouse gases, and other toxic particles into the air we breathe, leading to diseases such as lung cancer.
To address these challenges, the adoption of Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) presents a promising solution.
THR products offer alternatives that significantly reduce the emission of harmful substances and thus mitigate smoking-related air pollution, particularly in densely populated urban areas.
Promoting THR as a sustainable solution for air quality improvement requires comprehensive policies and initiatives.
The government, in collaboration with health organizations, medical practitioners, environmental agencies, advocacy groups, and the private sector, can launch campaigns to educate smokers about the environmental impact of smoking and highlight the reduced risks of switching to THR alternatives such as vapes and oral nicotine pouches.
Furthermore, investing in research to further understand the environmental impact of THR products and improve their technology, along with supporting innovations that enhance their effectiveness, is essential.
Policymakers must recognize the dual role of Tobacco Harm Reduction in mitigating risks to smokers while also tackling environmental concerns. By incorporating THR into the broader strategy for tobacco control, Pakistan can make significant strides toward achieving better air quality and a cleaner environment.
