A 22-year-old man from Quetta has tested positive for Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever, or CCHF, making it the second confirmed Congo virus case reported in Pakistan this year.
According to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, the patient, identified as Rahmatullah, was brought to the hospital after experiencing fever and repeated nosebleeds for two days.
Medical examinations showed that the patient had critically low platelet and hemoglobin levels. His liver enzyme levels were also significantly elevated.
Doctors conducted a Congo PCR test along with other medical investigations. The test result confirmed that the patient had contracted the viral infection.
Following the diagnosis, Rahmatullah was transferred to a hospital in Nipa for specialized treatment and medical observation. He remains under medical care.
Health experts said Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever is a potentially fatal viral disease that is mainly transmitted through the bite of infected ticks.
The virus can also spread through direct contact with the blood or tissues of infected animals.
Experts warned that healthcare workers and caregivers may also become infected if they are exposed to the blood or bodily fluids of infected patients.
They stressed the need for strict infection prevention measures while treating or caring for CCHF patients.
