Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has extended the tenure of Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, the incumbent Chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), for an additional year. This extension follows a summary from the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, forwarded to the Secretary of the Ministry of Federal Education on Tuesday.
Dr. Ahmed’s original two-year tenure concluded on Monday, July 29, 2024, after being appointed on the same date in 2022. The education ministry had earlier moved a summary recommending the extension, citing Dr. Ahmed’s significant contributions to the higher education sector.
A renowned educationist, Dr. Ahmed previously served as HEC Chairman from 2014 to 2018. His leadership is credited with advancing Pakistan’s higher education landscape, despite challenges including a controversial reduction in the tenure of the HEC Chairman from four years to two years during the PTI government. This reduction was enacted through an ordinance, which led to the premature removal of then-Chairman Dr. Tariq Banuri.
The Ministry of Federal Education had advocated for a two-year extension for Dr. Ahmed, reflecting their support for his continued leadership. However, the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif only granted a one-year extension to the HEC chairman.
In addition to Dr. Ahmed’s extension, the HEC also announced the appointment of Lt. Gen. (R) Moazzam Ejaz, HI (M), as the new Chairperson of the National Technology Council (NTC). Lt. Gen. Ejaz, who serves as the Rector of the National University of Technology (NUTECH) in Islamabad, will lead the NTC for a four-year term starting July 29, 2024.
