The Ministry of National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination will introduce robotic surgery at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
Following the approval of a Rs. 1.4 billion PC-I project, robotic surgery will be introduced at the hospital and its current surgical facilities will also be improved.
Dr. Malik Mukhtar Ahmed Bharath, the prime minister’s coordinator, is optimistic about the benefits of this advanced technology for patients. He also highlighted the potential for medical tourism and international career opportunities for local medical professionals.
It is pertinent to mention that earlier this year, King Edward Medical University (KEMU) proposed a PC-I project to the Punjab Health Department for introducing robotic surgery at Mayo Hospital.
This would make Mayo Hospital the first public sector teaching hospital in the province to offer this advanced, minimally invasive treatment with a reported “100% success rate.”
Notably, robotic surgery has been in use at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) in Karachi, where since 2012, surgeons have performed over 1,500 urology-related robotic procedures.
