The Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner (DC) has imposed an immediate ban on the sale, purchase, and supply of fireworks materials, including firecrackers, across the district ahead of Independence Day celebrations. This action has been taken under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
The DC’s directive mandates all Station House Officers (SHOs) to rigorously enforce the ban. Orders have been issued for SHOs in Rawalpindi district to immediately crack down on violators and confiscate any fireworks materials found.
Additionally, the authorities have been instructed to strictly monitor key wholesale markets known for the sale of firecrackers, including Nirankari Bazaar, Trunk Bazaar, Raja Bazaar, and Ganjmundi Bazaar. These areas will be closely watched to prevent any illegal sale and distribution of fireworks.
The decision comes as a response to growing concerns over the disturbance caused by fireworks. With Independence Day approaching, there has been a noticeable increase in the use of firecrackers, trumpets, and Chinese firecracker matches by children and youth. This activity has led to significant discomfort among citizens, disrupting daily life and causing distress.
From noon until late at night, children and teenagers have been reported using these items loudly in the streets, creating a nuisance for residents. The sound of large trumpets is particularly disruptive, often waking sleeping children and elderly patients. Residents have reported difficulty sleeping due to the continuous noise late into the night.
The use of firecrackers has also raised safety concerns. Youngsters have been seen igniting firecrackers and running away, causing loud explosions. These firecrackers are often thrown from rooftops and street corners, endangering passersby, particularly women walking by.
Despite the administration’s previous bans on the sale of firecrackers, some shopkeepers have continued to sell these items clandestinely. Stalls in various streets are openly selling different types of firecrackers to children and youth, further undermining the ban.
In response to these violations, the DC has emphasized the need for strict enforcement of the ban and has called for cooperation from the public to report any illegal activities related to the sale and use of fireworks. The authorities are determined to take all necessary measures to ensure a peaceful and safe environment for all residents during the Independence Day celebrations.
