The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced a significant relief measure for residence visa violators, granting them a two-month grace period to regularize their status without incurring fines.
Announced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP), this initiative will begin on September 1, 2024, and is designed to assist foreign nationals with expired residence permits.
Starting from September 1, 2024, foreign nationals residing in the UAE with expired residence visas will have a two-month window to either update their visa status or exit the country. This grace period, in line with the Federal Law on the Entry and Residency of Foreigners, will exempt violators from financial penalties usually associated with overstaying.
The ICP has pledged to take all necessary steps to ensure the smooth implementation of this initiative, including waiving fines and other legal consequences.
During this amnesty period, affected individuals will not be required to pay fines typically imposed under the Federal Law on the Entry and Residency of Foreigners. The ICP is dedicated to simplifying the process, ensuring a hassle-free experience for those seeking to regularize their visa status or leave the country.
Expatriates should be aware of the UAE’s residence visa regulations to avoid penalties. Visa validity varies depending on the type of visa and sponsorship. Sponsored visas typically last from one to three years, while self-sponsored visas can be valid for up to five or ten years.
Overstaying a visa can lead to financial penalties. In 2023, the UAE introduced standardized fines, reducing the daily overstay fee from Dh100 to Dh50 for residents, tourists, and visit visa holders. Residency visa holders need to renew their visas before expiration to avoid these fines.
Expatriates with canceled or expired residence visas are provided a grace period of up to six months to renew their visas. This period allows sufficient time to gather the necessary documentation and complete the application process.
The ICP will release additional details about the procedures and requirements following the announcement of the amnesty period. Expatriates should stay updated through official channels for the latest information.
The UAE’s two-month grace period offers a vital opportunity for residence visa violators to regularize their status or leave the country without facing penalties. This initiative highlights the UAE’s commitment to a compassionate and balanced approach to immigration policy.
