Rain Harvesting Systems to Be Installed at 30 Buildings in Rawalpindi

Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) Rawalpindi Managing Director Muhammad Saleem Ashraf has launched a project to install rain harvesting systems at 30 city buildings.

This initiative, in partnership with UN-HABITAT, aims to conserve rainwater, decrease the need for clean drinking water, and enhance sustainable water management.

Wasa MD Muhammad Saleem Ashraf highlighted that the partnership with UN-HABITAT will use advanced technology to improve Rawalpindi’s water management. The project will channel rooftop rainwater into underground tanks for non-potable uses, aiming to reduce pressure on the city’s water resources and support a more sustainable future.

Ashraf emphasized the rain harvesting systems as vital for conserving clean drinking water. He believes that with these installations, Rawalpindi could lead as a model for water conservation and sustainable urban development in Pakistan.

He also noted that WASA is collaborating with UN-HABITAT, the Parks and Horticulture Authority, and hospital managements to optimize rainwater harvesting. This initiative will store rooftop rainwater for use in horticulture and other non-potable applications, aiming to conserve clean drinking water and ease the strain on the city’s drainage system.

He also urged citizens to support Wasa by installing rainwater harvesting systems at their homes and businesses.

  • What and where are those 30 buildings? Are their rooftops strong enough to withstand such harvesting? I doubt it very much seeing the standard of construction in this country by greedy and unqualified contractors.

  • It’s a good initiative. That should be replicated. Only the foreign assistance will give us ideas. And we will always follow the cyclostyle projects. There should be a robust mechanism of coordination in between the Universities, relevant Govt dptts and industries for self sustaining in coming up with ideas and then developing such projects.
