Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jay Shah, is set to become the next Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC) following the resignation of current Chairman Greg Barclay.
Barclay, who had been serving since November 2020, announced his decision to step down during a video conference with ICC directors, including Cricket Australia’s Chairman, Mike Baird, on Tuesday night.
Barclay’s decision to not seek a third term paves the way for Shah, who has expressed his intention to assume the role in November.
Jay Shah claims he has the backing of several key members, including those from Australia and England, positioning him as the frontrunner for the position as head of ICC.
Nominations for the new ICC Chair must be submitted by August 27, 2024, with the new Chair expected to take over on December 1, 2024.
Shah’s potential appointment comes at a critical time for the ICC,led by Australian CEO Geoff Allardice, as the future of its management remains uncertain.
Additionally, questions linger about India’s participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in Pakistan during the months of February-March next year.
Shah’s term as BCCI Secretary is also set to expire next year, adding another layer of complexity to the transition at the ICC after Greg Barclay’s resignation.
