BMW announced a major recall in 2024, affecting 720,796 vehicles across various models due to a potential fire risk caused by a short circuit under the hood. This issue is linked to the water pump, where a short circuit might occur.
The recall, detailed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), stems from an incident reported in January involving a “thermal event” in an unidentified vehicle in the United States.
Subsequent investigations identified additional incidents, leading to an in-depth examination of the water pump and a particular electric plug connector. It was discovered that, in rare situations, “blowby fluid dripping from the intake air hose” could reach this plug and compromise its seal. This could allow fluid to enter the plug, resulting in a short circuit.
BMW’s investigation has revealed multiple occurrences of this issue. The recall report notes 18 cases where complaints or actual damage were linked to this problem. Fortunately, no injuries or accidents have been reported due to the faulty component.
The recall, identified as NHTSA recall number 24V608, impacts a wide range of BMW models produced between 2012 and 2018. The affected models include:
| BMW X1 sDrive28i / xDrive28i | 2012-2015 |
| BMW Z4 sDrive28i | 2012-2016 |
| BMW 528i / 528i xDrive | 2012-2016 |
| BMW 328i / 328xi | 2012-2016 |
| BMW X5 xDrive 40e | 2016-2018 |
| BMW 228i / 228xi | 2014-2016 |
| BMW 428i / 428i xDrive | 2014-2016 |
| BMW 328xi Gran Turismo | 2014-2016 |
| BMW X3 sDrive28i / xDrive28i | 2013-2017 |
| BMW X4 xDrive28i | 2013-2017 |
| BMW 428xi | 2015-2016 |
To address the issue, BMW will inspect the water pump and the affected plug, replacing them if necessary. Additionally, a shield will be installed to prevent fluids from reaching the plug.
Dealers have already been notified of the recall, with specific owner notifications set to begin on October 4.
