At least 13 children have died from diphtheria at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital in Karachi this year, raising fresh concerns about routine vaccination.
The hospital has received 30 diphtheria patients so far, and 13 of them could not survive. Health experts say delayed treatment and missed vaccine doses can make the disease more dangerous.
Sindh has reported 113 suspected cases, the highest number in the country. A total of 308 suspected diphtheria cases were recorded across Pakistan during the first six months of the year.
Diphtheria is a contagious infection that mainly affects the throat. Its common symptoms include high fever, severe sore throat, swollen glands, and difficulty breathing.
