Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh’s wicketkeeper batter, made headlines not just for his remarkable performance on the field but also for his compassionate gesture off it after a historic win for Bangladesh against Pakistan at Rawalpindi.
After being named Man of the Match for his stellar 191-run knock against Pakistan in the first Test at Rawalpindi, Rahim announced that he would donate his prize money to the flood-affected people of Bangladesh.
The country is grappling with severe floods that have devastated 11 districts, impacting over 4.8 million people and resulting in 15 deaths.
“I want to donate my prize money as there’s been a flood back in Bangladesh,” Rahim declared after Bangladesh’s resounding 10-wicket victory over Pakistan, marking their first-ever win against the hosts in Test cricket.
Reflecting on his innings, Mushfiqur Rahim described it as one of his best, particularly given Bangladesh’s struggles in overseas conditions.
He credited his success to the meticulous preparation of the team and the unwavering support from the coaching staff.
The Test match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with Pakistan initially struggling at 16 for three, only to recover through resilient centuries from Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan.
However, Rahim’s knock, supported by key contributions from Shadman Islam and Mehidy Hasan, ensured Bangladesh secured a vital first-innings lead.
On Day 5, Bangladesh’s bowlers, led by spinners Mehidy and Shakib Al Hasan, dismantled Pakistan’s batting lineup, leaving the openers to comfortably chase down the 30-run target.
Bangladesh will now look to build on this historic win in the upcoming second Test.
