Chinese phone makers seem to be racing to unveil tri-folding phone concepts again. While Huawei and Xiaomi are gearing up to announce their iterations, Tecno has already showcased the Phantom Ultimate 2 out of the blue. It follows after last year’s rollable phone concept, the Phantom Ultimate.
This trifold phone boasts a screen that unfolds to an impressive 10 inches, rivaling the size of full-sized tablets. When completely folded, the phone features a 6.48-inch screen. Unfolded, it transforms into a 10-inch LTPO OLED display with a resolution of 1,620 x 2,880 pixels and a 4:3 aspect ratio. With this expansive screen, the Phantom Ultimate 2 blurs the lines between smartphones, small tablets, and even full-sized tablets.
The company claims this is the first foldable phone to utilize TDDI technology, which combines the display driver and touch sensor onto a single chip. This innovative technology and a self-developed dual hinge mechanism allow the phone to maintain a remarkably slim profile, measuring 11 mm thick when folded. Tecno asserts that this elaborate hinge mechanism has been tested for 300,000 folds.
Furthermore, the brand has developed an ultra-thin battery cover, measuring a mere 0.25mm, contributing to the phone’s sleek design. The Phantom Ultimate 2 also supports screen hovering, adding to its unique features.
The Phantom Ultimate 2’s dual-hinge design serves multiple purposes. In addition to enabling a slim profile, the hinges help minimize the screen crease often found on foldable phones. Tecno envisions a range of innovative uses for the Phantom Ultimate 2. For example, the phone can be partially folded into a laptop-like configuration, with the bottom half serving as a keyboard for note-taking.
Alternatively, the phone can be positioned in “tent mode,” with two halves of the display facing opposite directions. This configuration is ideal for dual-screen video calls, allowing seamless face-to-face conversations with live translation capabilities.
The Phantom Ultimate 2’s expansive 10-inch screen supports multi-window mode, allowing users to run three or more apps simultaneously. This feature provides a less restricted multitasking experience, taking full advantage of the large display.
While Tecno has not yet announced a release date for the Phantom Ultimate 2, this innovative tri-fold concept offers an exciting glimpse into the future of foldable phone technology.
