HMD Wants to Revive Nokia Lumia 1020 Camera Phone

HMD Global, once the maker of Nokia phones, appears to be drawing inspiration from a beloved classic: the Nokia Lumia 1020. Just as classic flip phones resonate with customers to this day, the Lumia’s distinctive design, particularly its iconic circular camera bump, continues to captivate legacy Nokia fans.

Leaked images of an upcoming, unnamed Nokia model reveal a striking resemblance to the Lumia 1020. The leaked silhouette showcases a prominent, centrally positioned circular camera island on the back, housing an array of four lenses and an LED flash. This design choice harks to the Lumia 1020, renowned for its impressive 41MP camera sensor, also housed within a circular bump.

This isn’t the HMD Hyper, which features a rectangular camera island similar to the Nokia Skyline. And it’s distinct from another recently leaked HMD phone. The Hyper is rumored to be a more affordable, mid-range device, while this Lumia-inspired model is expected to be positioned as a premium offering.

While concrete specifications remain scarce, the leaked images provide one key detail: a quad-camera system. This would be a first for HMD Global, as the company’s most ambitious camera setup was the triple-camera system found on the Nokia Skyline (excluding models with dedicated macro lenses).

While the Nokia Skyline boasts a respectable 108MP+50MP+13MP camera system, it falls short of reaching the pinnacle of mobile photography established by its Lumia predecessors. The Lumias, despite losing their advantage years ago, were renowned for their exceptional image processing capabilities, a testament to years of dedicated research and development.

HMD Global, if it aspires to compete with today’s camera phone giants, faces a considerable challenge in replicating the software prowess that defined the Lumia and PureView cameras.
