Minister for Energy, Awais Leghari, caused a stir during Thursday’s National Assembly session after revealing he was experiencing symptoms of COVID-19. Speaking on the floor of the house, the minister stated, “I am feeling unwell, showing symptoms of Covid, but haven’t taken the test yet.”
The announcement raised immediate concerns, with the Deputy Speaker questioning the minister, “Are you trying to scare us that you’ve contracted Covid?” In response, Leghari clarified that despite his symptoms, he attended the session to respect the assembly and address questions. “I’ve come out of respect for the house to answer all queries,” he added.
The atmosphere grew tense when the Speaker jokingly asked if the minister was willing to shake hands with opposition members. Leghari responded humorously, “I would even like to hug the Leader of the Opposition.” However, upon insistence from other members, Leghari exited the assembly.
Leghari has been under media scrutiny due to his involvement in discussions on controversial capacity payments to Independent Power Producers (IPPs). He recently announced that the government is negotiating with Chinese firms to address high power tariffs.
He noted that re-profiling loans worth $8.5 to $9 billion could reduce electricity costs while boosting demand. Leghari emphasized that the government’s energy reform plans have been submitted to China’s National Energy Administration.
