Pakistan Customs seized over 15,465 smuggled mobile phones worth Rs. 446 million at the Sost Dry Port.
The Android-powered mobile phones were seized along with other non-duty-paid goods and a smuggling case has been registered.
According to a report submitted to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Customs officials at the Sost Dry Port received a tip-off that a truck was carrying smuggled mobile phones and other valuable goods. The truck had crossed into Pakistan from China via the Khunjerab Pass and was parked along the Karakoram Highway near Dehi.
Local residents informed the Customs team that the truck had been left there by an unknown individual who claimed it had a mechanical issue.
The truck was transported to the Sost Dry Port for safekeeping, and a public notice was issued to the unknown importer to submit ownership documents within 15 days. When no response was received, a team was assigned to conduct a detailed inspection of the vehicle.
The inspection revealed a total of 15,465 mobile phones, including 8,365 smartphones from brands such as iPhone, Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus, as well as 7,100 bar phones. The market value of the seized goods is estimated at Rs. 446 million.
The mobile phones and other goods have been confiscated and further legal action is underway.

As long as smuggling was going on during the past couple of years, the country’s economy was slightly better. I do not know the reason. Since the government has made apparent efforts to curb smuggling, the economy has gone down. Can anyone explain?
