Samsung’s Long Software Support Might Reach Budget Phones

Samsung’s commitment to extended software support, a key differentiator for its flagship devices, may soon benefit a broader range of its smartphone lineup. The Galaxy S24 series, which debuted in early 2024, marked a significant milestone as the first Samsung device to offer an unprecedented seven years of software updates.

Recent industry reports suggest that Samsung is exploring extending this long-term support beyond its premium offerings. The company is reportedly considering bringing similar extended update cycles to its budget and mid-range Galaxy smartphones.

According to a report from TheTechOutlook, corroborated by Sammobile, the tech giant is preparing to launch its next-generation budget device, the Galaxy A16 5G, by the end of this month. While not matching the seven-year commitment of Samsung’s flagship models, the A16 5G is reportedly slated to receive an impressive six years of OS upgrades and security patches.

If confirmed, this would position the device as one of the most extensively supported budget Android smartphones on the market, far exceeding the typical two to three years of updates currently offered in this price range.

This information comes from internal training materials shared with Samsung’s sales representatives.

Reports suggest the device will feature an expansive 6.7-inch AMOLED display, enhanced with a smooth 90Hz refresh rate. Adding to its durability, the A16 5G is said to come with IP54 certification, providing a degree of protection against dust and water exposure. Under the hood, the Galaxy A16 5G is rumored to be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 1330 processor.
