Update: “Pakistan Railways has not increased the fare of any class for any train,” a Pakistan Railways spokesperson refuted media reports regarding the fare increase in a statement to ProPakistani.
The original story follows…
In a surprising move, Pakistan Railways has increased the ticket prices for economy class passengers by 10 to 50 percent, even as fuel prices have recently decreased, according to multiple media reports.
This decision is set to affect many travelers, particularly on popular routes including Karachi to Hyderabad, Tando Adam, Tando Jam, and Kotri.
Moreover, passengers traveling between Lahore and Sialkot, as well as Narowal, Narang Mandi, and Faisalabad to Rawalpindi, will also need to pay higher fares. The increase for shorter distances, specifically those up to 250 kilometers, ranges from 10 to 20 percent.
This fare hike follows a recent announcement by railway authorities about a 10 percent reduction in ticket prices for various classes, including Business, AC Sleeper, and Economy. The timing of the fare increase has raised concerns among citizens already struggling with rising inflation.
This comes on the heels of a federal government decision to lower petrol prices by Rs. 10 per liter, bringing it down to Rs. 249.10. Other fuel prices were also cut, including kerosene oil, which decreased by Rs. 11.15 per liter, and high-speed diesel, reduced by Rs. 13.06, now priced at Rs. 249.69.
The recent fare increase stands in stark contrast to these reductions, further straining the budgets of ordinary commuters.
