Punjab Govt is Planning For High-Speed Rail Between Rawalpindi and Lahore

Pakistan is set to revolutionize its transportation landscape with plans for its first high-speed rail project linking Lahore and Rawalpindi. A proposal has been submitted to the Punjab Chief Minister for approval, outlining a project estimated to cost around $1.6 billion.

Developed by the transport and mass transit departments, the high-speed rail aims to enable trains to reach speeds of up to 250 km/h reducing travel time between Lahore and Rawalpindi to less than two hours.

The proposal stresses the importance of creating an action plan based on a pre-feasibility study conducted by the railway department, with funding expected from the Department of Planning and Development. However, acquiring initial financing for this ambitious venture remains a significant hurdle.

If greenlit, this high-speed rail initiative will mark a major advancement in Pakistan’s infrastructure, offering a faster travel option between two key cities.

It is pertinent to mention that the Punjab government recently approved a tram service for Lahore. This initiative was announced by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif during her recent visit to the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) headquarters.

The tram service will span 11 kilometers with ten stops approximately 1 to 1.5 kilometers apart.

Inspired by modern tram systems in Finland and China, the project will cost around Rs. 27 billion. The tram route will connect prominent areas including Main Boulevard from Kalma Chowk, Liberty, Main Market, Mini Market, and Hali Road.

To accommodate the tram, MM Alam Road will be transformed into a one-way street, enhancing the overall beautification of the area. A dedicated stop at Gaddafi Stadium will also serve sports fans and event-goers. Ticket prices for the tram service will be revealed closer to its launch date.
