Former Bangladesh cricket captain Mashrafe Mortaza finds himself embroiled in controversy as an FIR has been filed against him concerning the illegal transfer of shares.
The complaint, filed by Sarwar Ghulam Chaudhary, former chairman of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchise Sylhet Strikers, accuses Mortaza and five others of forcibly acquiring shares valued at Tk 4.5 crore from the team in 2023.
Chaudhary alleges that instead of compensating him for the shares, the accused issued death threats. The case has been registered at a local police station, with Inspector Adil Hussain confirming the FIR against the former cricketer.
However, no arrests have been made so far. This legal trouble adds to Mortaza’s recent challenges, as he is also under scrutiny for alleged involvement in student attacks during political unrest in Bangladesh.
Known as the “Narail Express,” Mortaza debuted internationally as a bowler in 2001 and enjoyed a celebrated cricket career. Beyond the pitch, he ventured into politics, aligning with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party.
The allegations against Mortaza come amid a backdrop of legal issues faced by other prominent cricketers in the country.
Notably, his former teammate Shakib Al Hasan was previously implicated in a murder case involving a garment factory worker. As the investigation unfolds, the cricketing community and fans await further developments in these high-profile cases.
