Update: The PlayStation Network is finally back up and running. The network appears to be recovering slowly so it might take time for some gamers who are still offline.
PlayStation gamers are experiencing widespread outages today. Sony’s PlayStation Network is down, affecting online play for PlayStation 3, PS Vita, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and web services.
The official PSN Service Status page confirms the issues. For several hours, many players trying to launch games have encountered error code WS-116522-7 on PS5. Sony’s website indicates this error relates to a failed system software update. For now, it seems only single-player games are accessible.
The outage is preventing players from signing in and accessing online features. Multiplayer games are unavailable, and even single-player games requiring online sign-in are affected. Offline games appear to be working normally.
Sony hasn’t identified the cause of the problem or given an estimated time for a fix. This outage seems unrelated to the recent PS5 home screen artwork bug, which was resolved earlier today. We’ll provide updates as more information becomes available.
Whatever the cause may be, it appeared to have been something major as it disrupted services around the whole world for hours. It is unclear if Sony plans to release a statement later on.
