Ashwin Equals Muttiah Muralitharan Record

Indian off-spin extraordinaire, Ravichandran Ashwin received his 11th Player of the Series award in Tests following India’s comprehensive 2-0 series sweep of Bangladesh. A feat that has put him level with legendary Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan’s long-standing world record.

Ashwin delivered an outstanding performance throughout the Test series against Bangladesh, showcasing his exceptional form with both bat and ball.

His contributions played a key role in India’s dominant victories in Chennai and Kanpur. The off-spinning all-rounder set multiple records during the series and was deservedly named Player of the Series. This recognition added yet another milestone to his already remarkable career.

The offspinner claimed six wickets in Chennai and added five more in Kanpur, ending the series as the joint-highest wicket-taker alongside pace ace Jasprit Bumrah.

His impact wasn’t limited to bowling either, as he also scored a crucial century in Chennai. His partnership with Ravindra Jadeja at Chepauk was pivotal, helping India recover from a difficult position.

Murlaitharan was not to be the only legendary spinner whose record trail would be shadowed by Ashwin, with Ashwin joining the late Shane Warne for the second-most 5-fers Test cricket, the most of which is a record also held by Muralitharan.

Ashwin’s 11 wickets in this series propelled him to the top of the wicket-takers list in the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle. With a total of 53 wickets, he has surpassed Josh Hazlewood, who has 51.
