District Administration to Get Control of Islamabad’s Major Hospitals

The federal government has decided to transfer administrative control of several hospitals in Islamabad to the district administration, ARY News reported, citing sources.

The hospitals include the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Federal General Hospital, National Rehabilitation Center, and Poly Clinic. Sources also revealed that the District Health Office, as well as basic and rural health centers, will be placed under district administration control. The transfer is expected to occur within a year.

The Ministry of Health and the Islamabad administration are currently preparing a plan for this handover, which is aimed at improving healthcare services in the capital, according to sources.

Earlier reports indicated that the Ministry of Health is also planning to outsource the diagnostic lab of PIMS, the country’s largest government hospital. Sources close to the development revealed that PIMS may soon operate under a Public-Private Partnership model, with a phased approach to outsourcing.

In the first phase, the Radiology and Laboratory Services departments at PIMS will be outsourced, followed by additional sectors in subsequent phases. In the third phase, sources suggested that discussions will take place regarding the utilization of PIMS’ vast land assets, which are valued in the trillions.
