Tim Southee Steps Down as Test Captain of New Zealand

Tim Southee has announced his resignation as the captain of the New Zealand red-ball side following a disappointing performance against Sri Lanka in a two-Test series.

According to reports, wicketkeeper Tom Latham will take over as captain for the upcoming series against India, which is set to begin on October 16.

In a statement, the now 35-year-old fast bowler said:

Captaining the Black Caps in a format that’s so special to me has been an absolute honor and a privilege, I’ve always tried to put the team first throughout my career, and I believe this decision is the best for the team.

Tim Southee originally succeeded Kane Williamson as Test captain in 2022. Since then, he has led the Blackcaps in 14 tests, winning six, drawing two, and losing six of them.

The veteran pacer has looked off-color of late, taking only six wickets at a worrying average of above 70 during the New Zealand home summer against a weakened South Africa and Australia, which has called into question his previously secure position in the bowling lineup.

Head coach Gary Stead remarked that Southee has been a valuable contributor to New Zealand cricket for almost 17 years on the international scene.

The Kiwis are set to tour India starting next Friday, with new skipper Tom Latham, having captained the test side in nine prior matches.
