E-Scooters Allowed on Dubai Metro Once Again

You can now bring foldable e-scooters when traveling on the Dubai Metro or Tram. On Friday, October 4, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced updated rules and guidelines for e-scooter users.

“Ensure that your e-scooter is folded and placed in designated areas, and do not ride it inside the stations,” the RTA stated on its official social media channels.

In March this year, the RTA prohibited e-scooters on the Dubai Metro and Tram to maintain commuter safety. However, the new rules now allow passengers to carry foldable e-scooters that meet specific criteria.

Permitted E-Scooters: The approved e-scooters must be foldable, without a seat, and should not exceed the size of 120cm x 70cm x 40cm, with a maximum weight of 20kg.

These guidelines apply during the operating hours of both the Metro and Tram.

Dos and Don’ts:

1. Charging e-scooters on Metro or Tram premises is not allowed.
2. Avoid blocking doors, seats, aisles, or emergency equipment.
3. Wet or dirty e-scooters are prohibited inside Metro or Tram premises.
4. Riding e-scooters in stations or on footbridges is forbidden.
5. E-scooters must be folded when entering stations, platforms, or while onboard trains or trams.
6. Always turn off your scooter’s power within Metro or Tram premises.
7. Ensure protruding parts like handlebars or pedals are retracted or covered to prevent injury or damage.
8. Commuters are responsible for the safe handling of their e-scooters.
9. Use wide gates when checking in/out at Metro stations with a folded e-scooter.
10. Follow all rules and be mindful of your e-scooter while traveling.

Technical Requirements: The RTA also emphasized the following technical standards for e-scooters, particularly regarding batteries:

• No damaged batteries
• No emission of environmental contaminants
• No modified parts
• No dual batteries
• Batteries must comply with international standards.
