The Khairpur police, investigating the mysterious deaths of 13 members of a family in Haibat Brohi village, have arrested a woman and her lover on August 19 for allegedly poisoning them. The tragedy unfolded when nine family members fell ill and subsequently died after consuming food at home, with four others succumbing to the illness during treatment in the following days.
In a press conference alongside SHOs Talib Junejo and Razia Shar of the Baradi Jatoi and women police stations, Gambat DSP Malheer Khan disclosed that the incident was reported on August 19. Initially suspected to be caused by a mysterious disease or food poisoning, an investigation was launched on the directives of Khairpur SSP Samiullah Soomro, who assembled a team of expert investigators.
According to DSP Khan, postmortem reports of two bodies indicated poisoning as the cause of death. Subsequent investigations revealed that poison had been mixed into the food consumed by the victims. The breakthrough came when Shaista Brohi, a surviving family member, was interrogated. Under intense questioning, she confessed to adding a substance to the food to influence her family to accept her desire to marry Amir Bakhsh Brohi, her lover. Shaista acknowledged that Amir had provided her with the substance, assuring her that it would lead to her family’s consent.
Shaista and Amir Bakhsh were arrested following the registration of a case (Crime No. 13/2024) at the Baradi Jatoi police station. Both suspects confessed to their involvement in the crime, which resulted in the deaths of Gul Baig, his wife Ms Gulzadi, their three sons (Manzoor Hussain, Dibar, and Dildar), four daughters (Khatoon, Samina, Hajiani, and Mariam), and relatives Asghar, Mohammad Bakhsh, and Shehzado.
The investigation continues as authorities work to understand the motives and circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
