Pakistan bookended their impressive participation at the 6th Asian Open (Kyorugi) Taekwondo Championship in Indonesia by securing the overall title after another medal-laden day.
With an impressive haul of three gold, three silver, and two bronze medals, the team delivered a historic performance, marking the first time in the country’s history that both male and female athletes from have achieved such success at an international taekwondo event.
In a nail-biting competitive tournament held from October 14 to 17, Pakistan finished at the top of the standings, ahead of Kazakhstan in with Malaysia rounding up the top three.
One of the standout moments came on Thursday when Haroon Khan clinched gold in the -58 kg category, defeating fellow countryman Abubakar in an intense final. Khan’s skill and composure were displayed in a hotly contested final as he edged out his opponent with scores of 6-4 and 9-7.
Over on the women’s side, Manisha Ali claimed Pakistan’s first gold in the women’s category in the -73 kg final, after decisively overcoming Indonesia’s Paramata Sari with scores of 4-1 and 8-2.
The Pakistani team’s dominant performance earned them the prestigious “Best Team” award while Shahzaib was honored as the “Best Athlete” of the championship.
Yousaf Karami, meanwhile, took home the title of “Best Coach,” underscoring a dominant showing by Pakistan at the prestigious Taekwondo Championship
