Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen was left shocked by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision to let Gary Kirsten go.
Kirsten, who famously won the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup with India and was appointed as Pakistan’s white-ball coach about 4 months ago, recently stepped down after being frustrated with how the PCB was seemingly stripping away all powers of a head coach from the head coaches. In response to Gary Kirsten resigning, the former English batter, Kevin Pietersen tweeted,
How can Pakistan Cricket lose Gary Kirsten’s with his resumè in coaching? One step forward the last few weeks and two steps back today! Stop doing it to yourselves. Too much talent to keep doing this kind of stuff!
It has been reported that Kirsten was reportedly dissatisfied with the squad selections for the upcoming limited overs series against Australia and Zimbabwe, which were chosen without his input despite his role as head coach. Additionally, the PCB reportedly declined to appoint his preferred personnel to key staff roles, escalating tensions further.
Pakistan is expected to announce a new coach soon, with Aqib Javed being rumored as the preferred favorite, especially considering Aqib has been afforded most of the powers Kirsten was deprived of. Red ball coach Jason Gillespie will function as interim head coach of the white ball side for Pakistan’s tour down under.
